Big tropical rain storm first thing this morning. Wind and rain and sideways rain. So, our plan to hit the beach club was kind of put on hold. We'll try another day.
So, the big adventure for today was that I drove to Wal-mart by myself. Technically Ruby went with me, but I had no navigator and did all the driving. It wasn't as harrowing as I thought it would be. You just have to have the right mind set. If you consider yourself the most important person on the road, and act accordingly, you fit right in! When in Rome. . .and all that.
We went to Wal-mart, made it there and back without incident, had a chat with some random person in the canned food aisle (let's be honest here, even after two weeks of sun, we're still the palest people on the island, and we get asked a lot if we just moved here or are visiting). It was one of the half-English/half-Spanish conversations that I seem to mostly have here. I give it a good shot in Spanish, and the people I'm talking to generally take pity when they see me struggling and fill in with some English. They have a lot of Spanglishy words anyway. I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'll try to write some down the next time I hear some.
After the shopping trip, we did nothing. Really. I needed a break from the sun and the water, so we stayed in today and played games and read books and watched videos. I didn't even take any pictures. It was nice. Our time here is winding down. I'm kind of getting used to this no responsibilities, no schedule thing. It might take me a while to get back into the swing of things when we get home.
As for as drivers in Rome: CRAZY!! I'm pretty sure if you were in Rome you wouldn't drive as the Romans, but I'm pretty sure you'd eat gelato like the best of them!!
ReplyDeleteMmmm. . .gelato. . .definitely!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can take some of the no-stress island attitude back with you when you go home! Make life a little more pleasant for everyone! Ahhhh. Sit around the pool, open a piña gigante, crack a book, turn off the phone, and un-lax for a couple of hours a day. Maybe throw a little Spanglish in just for flavor. You'll get the hang of it in no time!
